HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a digital interface for transmitting audio and video data in a single cable. HDMI connections are currently one of the most common connections in modern TV’s / Monitors therefore the demand for HDMI video encoders has dramatically increased over the past few years. HDMI cables have a 10m limit on length hence why alternatives like HD-SDI are used in broadcast as they support 100m cable runs.
HDMI encoders can have a loop in/out so that a monitor can be looped in and out through the encoder so that it can still display the video on the monitor whilst encoding it and also recording (on some products). DVI-D is the digital standard used in the past on monitors . A simple cable converter can be used to convert from HDMI to DVI-D and vice-versa.
DVI also can carry analogue signals so its important to verify if the DVI being used is pure digital else special A-D converters are required. A key feature of the HDMI standard is that it has an option to support HDCP which is content protection. If HDCP is enabled then most encoders will not encode the output of the HDMI cable with HDCP protection.
